JCC of Buffalo
The Jewish Community Center of Buffalo has a unique building, featuring a two story courtyard enclosed on two sides by windows. Installing a playground within meant a space to play would be available year round; Buffalo is, after all, known for its snowy winters.
Many of the components were custom designed and inspired by nature; earthy colors are used on both the structures and the durable surfacing that covers the floor, and kids can walk across log balance beams. Raccoons, woodpeckers, and owls look down from tree-topped poles that stretch towards the ceiling, and more woodland animals peek out from under a log bridge. The resulting space integrates the outdoors with the interior, and is warm and inviting regardless of the weather.
